Just the Right
Amount of Snow Settled the Dust at Moser Sale
The early morning snow on November 24th was just what was needed
to settle the dust the day of the Moser Ranch Production Sale.
During the early days of sale week, the Moser family debated
about asking the local fire department to come out and soak
their pens and sorting area so folks attending on Saturday
wouldn’t have to deal with the dry pen conditions. As it turned
out, the light blanket of snow did the job without becoming a
weather hazard, and by early morning on that cold day the pens
were full of cattle and buyers.
Gallons of coffee and cocoa, along with morning donuts were
served to the approximately 300 people attending the 16th Annual
Moser Ranch Production Sale. Harry and Lisa Moser, along with
their children Cameron, Kendra and Kayla, and herdsman Todd
Strahm, hosted the event at their ranch north of Wheaton,
Kansas. As bidders and buyers viewed the animals in the pens
that they had studied in the catalog information prior to sale
day, the Moser family was busy answering questions, preparing to
serve lunch and checking last minute sale preparations so the
auction would run smoothly.
Promptly at noon, there was a short welcome along with a moment
of silence to honor our troops and all attending veterans.
Auctioneer Dan Harris, Holton, then took over and cried a lively
sale, taking just three hours and five minutes to sell 224
females and 95 bulls. The barn was packed with people filling
the bleachers and standing especially around the areas where the
space heaters were located.
The sale got off to a brisk start with 10 fall pairs averaging
$1460. Nine purebred Angus cows-all four or five year
olds-averaged $1367, with the Eagle Bar Ranch, Alma, taking home
five head. Leon Mosteller-Prairie View Farms, Bern, took home
the high-selling Angus female lot at $1475. Mosteller’s
purchase, Moser 102 of 098 Example, was a GAR Example daughter
out of a WW Rito 8503 donor. She sold safe in calf to Bando
1961. Repeat customer Corey Dean, Kahoka, MO, paid $1600 to own
the top selling SimGenetics bred heifer, a half-blood FR Rezult
daughter out of a Ladiesman Red Angus cow. Five half-blood
spring bred heifers averaged $1440. New this year at the Moser
Ranch sale was the offering of six March and April born halter
heifers. With herdsman Todd Strahm heading up this effort, these
heifers averaged $1000/head and sold into Kansas, Missouri and
Oklahoma, with the high seller, 7506S, going to Shoal Creek
Simmental, Excelsior Springs, MO, for $1250. 7506S was a Black
Perfector daughter out of a 6I6 purebred Angus cow.
Eight Moser Ranch customers sold bred and open heifers on a
strong market in the next portion of the sale. Topping the bred
heifer offering at $1500 on a five-head lot was Double B Ranch,
Centralia. Lance Roskamp, Sutter, IL, was the buyer. Clyde
Aubert, St. Marys, paid $1475 to own a draft of five fancy
Simmental heifers from Ebert Cattle Company, St. George. Eagle
Bar Ranch, Alma, was again a volume buyer, taking home fifteen
head of the spring bred heifers, paying an average price of
$1390/head. 55 head of spring bred heifers averaged $1424. The
open heifer division topped at $1000/head when repeat customer
Doug Keeton, DVM, Cleo Springs, OK, paid that amount for five
Simmental x Angus females consigned by customer Justin Boswell,
Onaga. Twenty-five open heifers-all SimAngus cross-averaged
$900.
For the third year in a row, the Moser Ranch offered packages of
fall bred heifers at their sale. Seventy head averaged $1250,
with the high-selling lot of five head going to Bill Hilbert,
Meriden, for $1325/head. These heifers were AI’d the week after
the sale for September 1st calves, and will be picked up by
buyers in early February 2008, after pregnancy diagnosis.
The 95 bulls in the offering went to several commercial
operations from Kansas and across the nation. Lot 83, a ˝ Sim x
˝ Angus bull, sired by GAR US Premium Beef, topped the sale,
going to repeat buyer Allen Childs, Grandridge, FL, for $5750.
Ratioing 127 for test gain, this deep-bodied calf had many
admirers. Bidding by phone, Mr. Childs also purchased the Lot 18
bull, a solid black purebred Simmental sired by Hook’s Black
Perfecta, for $4500. Lot 18 gained 5.11/day on test and ratioed
114. Jim Hardin, Nevada, MO, purchased the Lot 33 bull, another
˝ Sim x ˝ Angus, sired by GAR US Premium Beef, for $5700. Lot 33
ratioed 111 for Marbling and 110 for test gain. Both black
blaze-faced calves, lots 33 and 83 were flush brothers and were
homozygous black and polled.
Zach Teter, a progressive young cattleman and repeat buyer made
the trip with his grandfather from Beverly, WV, to purchase two
bulls at $4600 each. Lots 17 and 20, both solid black purebred
Simmental bulls sired by Preferred Beef with ratios of 105 and
108 for REA were noticed by many potential buyers in the pens on
sale morning. Bidders were on the phone and in the stands vying
for the right to take these two home. Both bulls gained over
4#/day on test, with ADG ratios of 102 and 110.
A set of five flush brothers sired by Gambler and the Moser Full
Figures donor 038K were popular with the buyers near the sale’s
end. Lots 95 through 99 combined phenomenal carcass numbers and
great dispositions in 6.5 frame score packages. All five solid
black purebred Simmental bulls went to repeat buyers as follows:
Lot 95, $3700 to AK Farms Inc., Holton, KS: Lot 96, $3300 to Jim
and JoAnne Booth, Delia, KS; Lots 97 and 99 to David Sellmeyer,
Vinita, OK, for $3000 and $2800 respectively; and Lot 98, $2600
to Don Askren, Circleville, KS. Summarizing the Simmental and
SimAngus portion of the bull sale: Thirty purebred Simmental
bulls averaged $2454 and forty-three SimAngus bulls averaged
$2308.
The Angus division saw fourteen bulls averaging $2768. The high
seller went to repeat buyer Roy Niederklein, Girard, KS.
Niederklein paid $4200 to own the Lot 59 bull, a GAR US Premium
Beef son out of a five-year-old GAR Example daughter. This
stylish calf had ratios of 118 for Marbling and 102 for REA, and
gained 5.36#/day on test. Lot 71, sired by Morgan’s Direction,
sold to Leonard Edelman, Sabetha, KS, for $4000. Ratioing 121
for Marbling and 106 for REA, this bull was raised by a
three-year-old T510 Angus cow.
Sue Eden, Lenapah, OK, longtime Moser customer, was an active
phone bidder on several bull categories all day and took home
the high-selling Red Angus at $3000. Lot 73, a March 2005
Brown’s Vacation son out of a Chateau first calf heifer, ratioed
109 for REA and 118 for test gain. Eight Red Angus bulls
averaged $2294.
Volume bull buyers were: Sue Eden, Lenapah, OK, 5 head; Double B
Ranch, Centralia, KS, 3 head. Twenty-one operations took home
two bulls each. Volume female buyers were: Eagle Bar Ranch,
Alma, KS; Prairie View Farms-Leon Mosteller, Bern, KS; Kevin &
Dave Lueger, Seneca, KS; Doug Keeton, DVM, Cleo Springs, OK. 137
