10th Annual Bull Sale Results...

Red Bulls Reign as High Sellers at Successful Moser Sale

For the second year in a row, red Simmental yearling bulls topped the offering at the Moser Ranch Bull Sale. Harry and Lisa Moser and family-Cameron, Kendra and Kayla-Wheaton, hosted their 10th annual production sale at the Holton Livestock Exchange on Saturday, February 9, 2002.

As potential buyers filled the alleys before the sale to examine the Moser bulls, many conversations started with a comment about this year’s weather being much more cooperative than the rain/ice/snow storm combination that preceded Moser’s 2001 sale.

Red Simmental bulls claimed the top three high-selling spots at the auction. Select Sires, Inc., Plain City, OH, paid $5000 to own Lot 156L, “MSR Red Answer 156L”. This non-dilute bull had a 15.1 sq.in. ribeye, a %IMF reading of 3.4, and a birth to yearling EPD spread of 3 to 71. His length and thickness together with his solid patterned, dark cherry red color caught the eye of many potential buyers. “Red Answer” was sired by MSR Next Step and was out of a solid black Pollfleck dam.

Leonard Mackley, Arnold, NE, purchased the second high selling lot of the day, Lot 1053L, “MSR Red Out 1053L”. This non-dilute ET bull was sired by TNT Black Out and out of a moderate framed, solid red, good uddered Bodacious X Irish Black Knight donor. This frame 7 bull’s ribeye scanned at 14.7 sq.in. and he posted an Adj. 205 Day Weight of 738#. Mackley Simmentals had the final bid on “Red Out” at $4900 when auctioneer Dan Harris’ gavel fell.

Coming in at $4100 and third high seller for the day was another ET bull, Lot 1062L, “MSR Red Figure 1062L”. Lyle Dixon, Dixon Farms, Inc., Atwood, KS, made his purchase of the solid red Lot 1062L over the phone on saleday. This Full Figures X Redcoat X Pollfleck son had many admirers out in the pens during the morning hours. Lot 1062L is a maternal half-brother to Moser’s 2001 high selling bull, “MSR Arapahoe Red 0050K”.

AK Farms, Inc., Holton, KS, purchased the first bull in the ring to start the sale, for $4000. Lot 125L, “MSR Blacksmith 125L” was a homozygous black Craftsman X Full Figures son that ranked 2nd out of 41 bulls at weaning and had a 744# Adj. Weaning Weight. He and Lot 1053L had been seen and appreciated by many in January at both the Topeka and St. Joe Farm Shows.

Aaron Allen, Soldier, purchased the top selling Angus bull, Lot 121, a New Design X Traveler 5204 X Bando 155 son that scanned a 14.5 sq.in. ribeye and had a +.44 marbling EPD. Allen paid $2750 to own this deep, soggy made bull. Topping the Red Angus division were a pair of full brothers, Lots 331 and 361. These Grand Canyon X Leland King Kong sons commanded $2000 each from repeat customer Ray Splichal, Munden, and new customer Al Schwery, Osborn, MO.
Volume buyers were Eldon & Julie Sylvester, Wamego, picking up four head. Five other repeat customers-four from Kansas and one from Nebraska-purchased three bulls each.

A standing room only crowd was on hand as Harry announced at the start of the auction that he and Lisa had shared a twenty year marriage milestone, and were about to celebrate ten years of annual bull sales.

Sixty-five percent of the offering went to repeat customers. Bulls sold into the states of Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio and Alabama, and over 130 buyers were registered from nine states. 82 Simmental bulls averaged $2234; 11 Angus bulls averaged $2050; and 8 Red Angus bulls averaged $1550. 101 Total Lots averaged $2160.
