12th Annual Bull Sale Results... Steady and Successful Best Describe Moser’s Valentine’s Day Bull Sale After weeks of facing snow, ice and generally miserable conditions on the ranch, cattlemen from around the Midwest took advantage of a bright, but brisk Valentine’s Day to attend the 12th annual Moser Ranch production sale featuring Simmental, Angus and Red Angus genetics. The icy conditions made getting around in the pens at Holton Livestock a bit treacherous, but the Mosers had bedded down the bulls in deep straw to make it easy for customers to evaluate the thick, high performing bulls close-up on sale day. The Mosers also provided a pre-sale video of the entire offering for customers to view the cattle prior to arriving at the sale, or give to customers who couldn't make to the auction in person to evaluate the cattle and then place bids over the phone. Once again on sale day it was standing room only as Harry and Lisa Moser introduced their families and the cooperating herds that make their breeding program possible. Harry reminded the group that a number of feeding alliances were in attendance that were interested in calves sired by Moser bulls. There were no extreme selling prices on sale day, but the consistency of the bidding to auctioneer Dan Harris by the barn full of progressive commercial cattlemen led to the Moser sale ending with an average of $2387 on the 109 head of bulls they brought to town to sell. 140 buyers from eleven states were registered for the sale. High-seller for the day was the purebred Simmental Lot 3085N, a solid red, non-dilute bull sired by MSR Red Answer 156L and out of a four year old Arapahoe x Redcoat dam. Repeat customer Bob Keightley, MO, paid $4000 to own this stylish and heavy muscled frame 6 bull. Lot 3085N was a maternal ½ brother to the 2003 high-selling lot for the Mosers, which went to Saskatchewan, Canada. His sire, Red Answer, was the high-selling lot at Moser’s 2002 sale. Two other purebred Simmental bulls sold at the $3800 mark. Lot 3331N, another solid red, non-dilute bull sired by MSR Arapahoe Red and out of a Cisco X 3C Pasque Moser donor, sold to repeat customer Marple Simmentals-Dave & Chris Marple, KS. Lot 3024N, a homozygous black calf sired by Lucky Break and out of a Black American x Irish Black Knight first calf heifer sold to new customer Dave Hageman, KS. Matt Homandberg purchased Lot 3317N for $3300. Homandberg had seen this calf’s picture and stats on the Moser website and bought him solely on that information. This Joker x Bold Future flush of frame score 7 bulls had many friends before the sale, and the set of 4 full brothers-all black with white blazefaces-averaged $2840. First-time customer Larkin Stenstrom, KS, chose Lot 3338N, a Lucky Break son out of Moser’s rock solid Redcoat donor, 515E, and paid $3300 to own him. Ken Ellerbrock, IL, selected Lots 2122M & 2116M for $3250 and $3050, respectively, to use in his cow/calf program. These fall Simmental bulls weighed in at 1585# and #1520, and were ET full brothers sired by Lucky Dice. Ellerbrock retains ownership of his calves and feeds them out through the Decatur Beef Alliance. Gary Rupprecht, NE, chose the Lot 3310N bull, an ET son of Joker and out of a Zinger dam, for $3200. This Joker x Zinger flush was another popular set of calves on sale day, with the five homozygous black bulls in the flush averaging $2630. Martin Farms, TN, selected Lot 3083N, another RIV Choctaw son out of the Moser’s 152C donor, one of the matriarchs of their Simmental program. This homozygous black blazeface calf ranked #1 at weaning in the Moser herd, with an adjusted weaning weight of 800 pounds. His thickness and stoutness were the topic of much pre-sale discussion. Repeat customer Ed Livingston, NE, took home Lot 3151N, a ½ Simmental x ½ Angus bull sired by MSR Blacksmith and out of New Design 036 female for $3100. Lot 3335N, a red blazeface non-dilute sired by MSR Arapahoe Red, sold to Fencepost Farms, Inc., KS, for $3100. Bob & Russ Smith, NE, also long time friends and customers, purchased two full brothers out of the Joker x Bold Future flush of bulls. They paid $2900 each to own Lots 3320N and 3321N. New customer but previous years’ bidder Roy Niederklein, KS, paid $2900 to own one of the 6I6 x Preferred Stock half-blood bulls, Lot 3291N. Repeat customers Don & Teresa Schuyler, KS, also purchased one of the 6I6 x Preferred Stock half-bloods for $2900. Schuylers have retained ownership and fed cattle through the PM Beef Alliance with Mosers since 1998. The high-selling Red Angus bull went to long time customer John Eagan, KS. John paid $2800 to take home Lot 283, a thick made son Chateau and out of a Leachman Ladies Man dam. Repeat customer and neighbor Alan Fischer, KS, purchased the high-selling Angus bull of the sale for $2300. Lot 173 was a 6I6 son out of a WW Rito 8503 dam. Overall sale averages were: 99 Simmental bulls at $2420; 2 Red Angus bulls at $2600; and 8 Angus bulls averaged $1938. Bulls sold in a range from $4000 to $1400. Volume buyers were Rezac Land & Livestock, KS, taking home 5 head, and the following operations each purchased three head-Buddy Carlee, AL; Murray Ranches-Tim Murray, KS; Bernard Ohlsen, KS; Koelzer Farms KS; Frank & Janice Cranor, OK; and Sue Eden, OK. Bulls sold into the states of Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Illinois, Tennessee and Alabama. 70% of the bulls went to repeat buyers. The price paid for bulls by cattlemen at the Moser sale reflected the price paid for measurable information on how cattle really perform through harvest. As more and more cattlemen desire to improve their herds with known genetics and become active in feeding alliances or utilize other progressive marketing methods for their calf crops, the Moser Ranch will continue to do all it can to provide these services in addition to supplying proven genetics to help customers reach their goals. |
