Moser Ranch Hosts Successful 13th Sale

The cold drizzle fell steadily on Saturday, February 12, but that didn’t stop the droves of cattlemen and women from braving the weather to inspect the Simmental, Angus and Red Angus bulls offered by the Moser Ranch of Wheaton. Although the bulls were bedded down in deep straw and soaking wet, cattlemen couldn’t help but notice the thick, growthy animals that had been developed. When sale time had arrived, Harry and Lisa Moser were looking out from the auction block at a packed house of eager bidders at Holton Livestock.

Auctioneer Dan Harris started the sale promptly at 1PM, and by 4:15, 121 bulls and 90 head of commercial females had gone through the ring. Strong and steady would be two words that best describe the afternoon’s activities.

The high selling bulls of the day were a pair of full brothers-Lots 4550P and 4553P-sired by Lchman Body Builder and out of a Full Figures x Redcoat donor. These springborn purebred Simmentals were the 56th and 57th bulls to enter the ring, and were purchased by Robert Christopher, Butler, MO, for $4750 and $4500. Deep bodied, thick made, and posting adjusted weaning weights of 753 and 773 pounds, these two red blazeface bulls were crowd favorites.

Lot 3433, a fall purebred Simmental bull sired by Joker and out of a Full Figures x Arapahoe donor, sold to repeat customer Dan Schullian, Quincy, IL, for $4400. Four bulls in this flush posted ADG’s on test from 4.11 to 4.72, and averaged $3940. Other buyers of the flush bulls were Mathews Farms, Panaca, NV, and repeat customers Aaron Allen, Holton, KS, and Scott Gooderl, Hoyt.

Another full brother to the high selling pair of red bulls was purchased by repeat customers Fencepost Farms-Vernon and Barbara Egbert, McCune, KS. The Egberts were active bidders on the red bull offering all day, and paid $4250 to own Lot 4555P, “MSR Motor Oil 4555P”.

Top selling half-blood bulls were purchased by repeat customer Amon Livestock, Netawaka, KS, and fell in line next as high sellers. Lots 3453N and 3454N, sired by Lucky Strike and out of a purebred Angus donor sired by WW Rito 8503 DJH 019, sold for $4300 and $4100. These fall bulls had the highest Marbling EPD’s of the Simmental offering at .4, and adjusted weaning weights of 737 and 841 lbs.

Repeat customers Norm and Trish Brackenbury, Wamego, KS, purchased the Lot 3210N bull, a fall born half-blood son of 6I6 and out of a first calf Simmental heifer sired by Lucky Break. Another half-blood sired by T510, and a purebred Simmental sired by Twister, sold at the $4000 mark to repeat customers Kennedy Ranch, Soldier, KS, and Ken Ellerbrock, Ursa, IL.

In the Angus division, the gavel fell at $4150 for Lot 144-a New Design 878 x Fame x WW Rito 8503 son selected by Mathews Farms, Panaca, NV. This powerful calf was one of the heaviest muscled Angus bulls the Moser Ranch has ever offered for sale. Repeat customer Roy Niederklein, Girard, KS, picked up the Lot 613 bull for $3400. A 6I6 x WW Rito 8503 x 5204 fall bull, Lot 613 was the combination bull of the Angus offering, putting together calving ease, maternal and carcass traits in an eye-appealing package.

Although numbers were small, the quality ran deep in the Red Angus division. Three bulls averaged $3200, with the high seller-a Cherokee Canyon son, going to repeat customer Aaron Allen, Holton, KS, for $3800.

121 bulls averaged $2908, with the following breakdown: 70 Purebred Simmental Bulls $2881; 30 SimAngus Bulls $3013; 18 Angus Bulls $2794; 3 Red Angus Bulls $3200. The price range for the entire bull offering was from $4750 to $1700. 55 Fall Bred Commercial Heifers were sold in drafts of five and averaged $1360/head. 40 Spring Open Commercial Heifers were also sold in groups of five and averaged $960/head. Volume buyers were Steve Suther, Onaga, KS, taking home 5 head of Angus bulls; Mathews Farms, Panaca, NV-4 bulls; and Ron Grotrian, Johnson, NE, Aaron Allen, Holton, KS and Delores Boling-Harris, each purchasing 3 bulls.
